Hammer Toe

Do hammertoes cause symptoms?

Not always, although much like bunions, hammertoes are progressive. Even if your hammertoe doesn’t seem like much of an issue now, without proper medical treatment, it can certainly progress. Initially, hammertoes are flexible and can still bend. As time goes on, hammertoes start becoming stiffer, which can lead to:

  • Painful corns and open sores
  • Burning or stabbing sensations
  • Inflammation, swelling, or redness

Hammertoes tend to flare up and cause problems when you’re wearing shoes, especially if your footwear is snug.

What caused my hammertoe?

If any of the above symptoms sound familiar, you may have an imbalance between the muscles and tendons in your toe. Oftentimes, this imbalance occurs when you have smaller toes that are longer than your big toe. Each time you slip on a pair of shoes, your smaller toe has to scrunch up to fit into the toe box.

While this probably isn’t a concern once in a while, if you wear ill-fitting shoes on a regular basis, muscles and tendons constrict. They get to the point where they can no longer keep your toe flat.

But footwear isn’t always the only culprit when it comes to hammertoes. Your risk of developing hammertoes also goes up if they run in your family, if you have arthritis, or if you have an injury, like stubbing your toe. No matter the cause of your hammertoes though, you have options for treatment at Sequoia Foot Care Group.

Is there an effective treatment for a hammertoe?

Yes! When you come into Sequoia Foot Care Group for your hammertoe evaluation, Dr. Motos evaluates your feet and if needed, looks at in-office digital X-rays to determine the severity of your toe deformity. Once he gets a more clear analysis of your hammertoe, he talks with you about your treatment options, which may include:

  • Custom orthotics
  • Specialized padding
  • Corn or callus removal
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

If you have a severely rigid hammertoe, or if your hammertoe isn’t responding to conservative treatments, Dr. Motos could recommend surgery. Modern hammertoe procedures are minimally invasive and require little downtime.

Dr. Motos uses advanced surgical tools to correct your toe joint and set it into proper alignment while removing or repairing damaged tissues. With so many hammertoe treatments available at Sequoia Foot Care Group, you can expect effective relief from ongoing discomfort.
